I am asking you to help out the NetLogo community and our project with 30 minutes or less of your time. We need expert opinions to help us validate a performance assessment we are using with middle school children as part of an exploration of a possible relationship between computational thinking and chemistry learning. I work on an NSF-supported project at Virginia Tech and UT Austin that uses NetLogo simulations first to simulate difficult-to-learn science concepts and then to help students as they learn to make changes to the code. When we say “difficult to learn”, we are drawing on the literature about misconceptions of science. At the end of our instruction, students take a short performance assessment that aims to measure student learning of both science and computational thinking. Our concern is with validating the computational thinking portion of the test. One component of validating the test is to make sure that it distinguishes between experienced and novice NetLogo users. Therefore, we would like to know how you would answer the questions on the test. (Note: Some of you may not feel very experienced with NetLogo, but anyone in this google group counts as an expert. We are comparing your answers to those of 12 – 14-year-olds with no prior programming experience.) It is better for us if you do some of the tests than none at all, although the data are most valuable when people complete the questions. No identifying information will be collected. Your responses are completely anonymous. Data from responses will be exported into an excel file and analyzed in aggregate form. We may also look at individual respondents’ open-ended responses, but the identity of each respondent will not be known. In order to be sensitive to ethical concerns associated with working with minors, we ask that participants be 18 years of age or older.
