Although the motivation remains understandable, the decision in 4.0 to mix `ticks` initialization with `GUI` initialization in `reset-ticks` still feels ugly (imo). This could be offset by adding a `setup-ticks` command that does no more than declare the tick counter and initialize it to zero. This seems a natural complement to `setup-plots`.
