There's a fractal element to this. Depending on the scale at which you look at 
these things - be they networks, NEs or even the switching fabrics within those 
- they are all similar to the extent that you can describe their internal 
connectivity with a graph. 

I guess another way to look at this is that big networks are out of little 
networks built ;-)
