Apple recalls PowerBook batteries

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Apple Computer said Thursday it will recall
28,000 batteries used in its PowerBook laptop computers due to fire-hazard
concerns.

Apple (AAPL: news, chart, profile) said the recall applies only to
certain rechargeable batteries used in its 15-inch PowerBook G4 computers.
Apple said it launched the recall after receiving four reports of batteries
overheating, although no injuries have been reported.

The batteries, made by South Korea's LG Chemical, contain cells that were
made in the last week of December 2003. The batteries have the model number
A1045 and serial numbers that begin with HQ404, HQ405, HQ406, HQ407 or
HQ408.

Apple said customers should stop using the batteries and contact Apple for
a free replacement.
