Hello All,

My name is Charles Wyble and I'm the CTO and founder of socalwifi.net.
More information on the project can be found at http://www.socalwifi.net/index.php/Main_Page

There is a substantial amount of information on the internet about mesh, solar powered access points, firmware etc. However it's somewhat scattered, a lot of do it yourself bits to it etc. Nothing wrong with that approach by any means, but it somewhat limits participation to more technically inclined folks, and can be somewhat frustrating and time consuming before getting any return.

The goal of our project is to create a low cost, integrated, fully grid independent solution for use by people to provide service in their neighborhoods/cities all over the world.

Our solution is based on the Nanostation2 from ubnt.com
http://ubnt.com/products/ns2.php (weather proof, great range (about half of a US city block, and covered an entire strip mall) utilizing lightly modified firmware from http://ff-firmware.sourceforge.net/

We are using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SheevaPlug
to provide infrastructure bits (such as splash page/local ads (classifieds/job hunting/elgg for social networking)

Netsukuku has obvious interest for us, as it can help with a lot of network setup issues. The access layer and application part is pretty straightforward, however scalability and management of nodes is an issue.

We are currently evaluating both olsrd and batman for use with netsukuku . Feel free to chat with me in IRC or the mailing list. :)

I look forward to testing things out and providing my feedback.

I'll be posting my progress on my twitter feed ( http://www.twitter.com/charlesnw ) and my blog (http://cnwccxx.blogspot.com/) and will post summaries to the list as I go along.
