I'm in favour of broadening the discussion of networks to more readily include non-human elements such as animals, climate, water, energy, etc. That was implied already with reference to Anna Tsing's work and here and there. If that project interests you I invite you to read my new book, Virtual Menageries: Animals as Mediators in Network Cultures, MIT & Leonardo, 2019. I'd love to join in more discussion of this. I found that there was a large empty space between network studies and what we could call environmental media studies or environmental humanities or animal studies.... so I tried to create something there. Looking at animals as network mediators gave me a way to work through some kind of postman network or assemblage theory without falling into the emptiness of OOO (if you don't mind my saying so) and to explore the genealogies of pre-digital and emergent digital networks in the context of colonial and capitalist critique. It also opens up a space to look at flows between online and live performances. Maybe I should write something more about this. #XR! Thanks for inspiring me with the current discussion. Jody Berland
