As we discussed recently, having internal compression functions that can do more than one block has the potential to speed up hash functions where compression is pretty fast, typically thanks to specal hardware instructions. I've tried that out for sha256, on the branch "sha256-compress-n".
Most notable speedup is for s390x, where speedup of sha256 (for large messages) is 2.5 times. I think I will merge these changes soon, any feedback or additional benchmarks most welcome.
