Dear members of the FOSSCOMM community,

We at DeepRoot Linux strongly feel about the technology/organisation specific
web manifestations of the Govt. of India. This stifles widespread use and
access of such an amazing initiative as Bhuvan. I mailed my protest regarding Bhuvan to [email protected]. I have followed up on the discussions over FOSSCOMM as well regarding this.

I just wanted to share the same with the FOSSCOMM community. It is as follows:
----------------------------------------------

First of all, I must congratulate 'Department of Space' for this
wonderful endeavour called 'Bhuvan'. As an Indian I feel proud.

But the constraints which accompany a mere visit to this site might
be detrimental to its widespread access, use and popularity. I have
listed some below:

Mininimum System Requirements:

  * Operating System: Windows XP/Vista;CPU: Pentium 4 2.4GHz+ or AMD
2400xp+ ;System Memory (RAM): 512MB ; Hard Disk: 2GB free space
;Network Speed: 768 Kbits/sec; Graphics Card: 3D-capable with
    32MB of VRAM; Screen: 1280x1024,32-bit True Color;

  * To browse Bhuvan, you require the Bhuvan Plug-in which can be
downloaded from this website, after registration and you will
also need DirectX 9.0 or higher version
    (www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/) and
MS .NET framework 2.0 or above for installing the plug-in. Please
note that the Bhuvan Plug-in can be installed with administrative
    privileges only.

Also, the attachment 'Bhuvan.jpeg' highlights the need of installing an '.exe' file
which is impossible to do in a Linux platform.

Considering the growing adoption, use and popularity of GNU/Linux
platform for use (both business and personal), shouldn't the
Government enable a platform independent and neutral use in all its
web manifestations. Not doing so would mean neglecting a huge group
of users (students, business and individuals). Even if this group is
dubbed as an exception, I can assure you that in India such
exceptions too run in millions.

Please look into this issue and help ensure a neutral environment for
all visitors on your site and remove technology or organisation
specific/based constraints which might stifle widespread access, use
and yes- popularity.

We look up to the Govt. of India to set precedents and we know we
have the right to believe so.

--------------------------------------------

I am looking forward to being an active member of the FOSSCOMM discussions.
Best wishes from DeepRoot Linux.

Regards,
