SSA to fund learning through computers in schools

Come the next academic session and around 1,775 junior schools across the state will have access to computer-aided learning. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has allotted funds to the tune of Rs 25 lakh to authorities of each district of the state, and asked them to ensure the start of computer-aided education from the coming academic session. “The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is providing computers to 25 schools selected in each district of the state. Funds worth Rs 25 lakh has been allocated to set up the infrastructure,” said D C Kanaujia, Director, Basic Education department. A senior official with the Basic Education department added: “Funds have been released for *computer-aided education *in schools of each district across the state. While the delivery of lessons will be made interesting, it will also help cover up for the absence of teachers.” With the computer at their disposal, students will be taught through *power point presentations* and use of pictures and graphics.

While the term 'computer aided education' is usually used in SSA CAL programs, there is no explanation how this will happen through "*powerpoint presentations* and pictures and graphics" ... and our own work has shown that focusing on computer literacy has little impact on the schools teaching learning processes and hence detrimental considering opportunity costs ... while using *FOSS educational tools as Sugar or Geogebra et al* (while not replacing any of the traditional syllabus/teaching processes) can help the teacher and through the teacher, students, able to relate to specific concepts better.

Is there anyone based in Lucknow who can meet Mr Kanaujia and share with him experiences of using FOSS in schools to support computer aided learning .. http://www.public-software.in/images/docs/kerala_it-school.odp has a presentation on how Kerala has designed its far superior ICT in schools program ... More info on the same is available on http://www.itschool.gov.in/
