With the open standards in e-governance policy notified, it is a
violation to have tables in 'excel' on the census website.
I request FOSSCOMM members to register their feedback on need to use csv
or ods formats instead of .xls ones .. on
http://www.censusindia.gov.in/Feedback/complaintsdirectory/complaints_register.aspx
(hope some of you did give feedback on the science and technology
website which i had written about around a couple of weeks ago)
Since in many cases it is a matter of ignorance; simple, to the point
and cordial mails could be effective ...
My feedback was as follows
The policy on open standards in e-governance, issued by Dept of IT, GoI
mandates use of open standards in government. see
http://egovstandards.gov.in/policy/policy-on-open-standards-for-e-governance/view.
The .xls format used by Microsoft Excel is a closed format, which is
proprietary and hence not to be used in government work. Please use the
.csv or the .ods formats
and I got an acknowledgement page with a ref no...which i can use to
followup...
