Yes, open core is bad.  And not just because a proprietary company has 
withdrawn the facility to embed a proprietary product using proprietary 
protocols into a FOSS package, but in general.  If you choose 
proprietary products and proprietary protocols you stand the chance of 
losing access to them some day.  Better to shun them from the outset and 
select openness, even if it means reduced functionality in the 
beginning.
