This article appeared in yesterday's Indian Express. IT is a golden opportunity to mount a strong advocacy campaign with MEA, reminding them of 1. vulnerability of proprietary software and 2. size and capability of homegrown developer community to create strong and auditable systems for future use of government departments, and 3. declared government policies in this context (whose actual employment in this key area is almost nil). In fact, the strength of email systems such as Mailman must be highlighted, in order to assist government mail and network admins to be more sensitive to departmental needs, creating the email IDs needed and deploying them (ie secure services) from secured boxes located in India.
I suggest a quick work group appoint itself to draft out and despatch at least a preliminary message to the concerned MEA honchos, cc to the Home Minister, the Foreign Minister and maybe a few key media outlets - maybe more than a few. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Abhishek Kumar (DSCI) <[email protected]> Date: Wed, Aug 31, 2011 at 11:50 AM http://www.indianexpress.com/news/cyber-attacks-mea-orders-pcs-reformatting/ 839584/ Regards, Abhishek Kumar | Security Analyst | DATA SECURITY COUNCIL OF INDIA (DSCI) | A NASSCOMĀ® Initiative L: Haryana Cyber Lab, Multimedia Hub | Haryana Police Academy | Madhuban | Haryana - 132037, India P: +91-184-2390601 | F: +91-11-26155070 | M: +91-9355964773 | E: [email protected] | W: www.dsci.in Disclaimer: The information contained herein (including any accompanying documents) is confidential and is intended solely for the addressee(s).
