A seminar on 'Public Software in Technical Education - Opportunities and Challenges' will be held on October 30 at Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic (SJP) college, for government, aided and private polytechnic colleges in Bengaluru division. Senior officials from the Department of Technical Education, NITTTR, academia, engineering colleges faculty,  industry representatives along with heads of institutions and departments of polytechnics will discuss challenges in polytechnic education. Panel discussions, presentations and demonstration sessions will cover how  public software (popularly known as free and open source) educational tools can be leveraged to improve quality of education, by creating a free, collaborative and resource rich learning environment. A resource DVD with public software educational tools relevant to technical education will also be shared with participants. 

The seminar is being organised by Department of Technical Education (Government of Karnataka) and Public Software Centre, IT for Change (a Bengaluru-based NGO), and supported by MHRD (Government of India) under the 'Spoken Tutorial' project of National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). Similar seminars will be held for other divisions of Karnataka later.

Public Software Centre conducts workshops to enable colleges adopt various Free and Open Source Software educational applications in their curriculum. It also conducts IIT certification programme on FOSS tools, free of cost. Interested institutions or faculty can write to [email protected].
