In my view, even if Microsoft release its source code in MIT-GPL then also it should not be qualify as Free software project because generally every free & open source project are released in alpha-beta version with very small codebase, it create a usebase and developerbare, then community develop it and give contribution to it. because community work for it, the software process is more like evolution. kind of democracy in development. So, it has a cultural taste in it. On the other hand , a company work in a very close manner and do not even maintain release history or code documentation, there is no plug-play architecture in it. After making good profit, If a company release a project with a open license then that will be a garbage codebase simply because the whole free and open source community do not get any benefit from it. in summery : releasing such projects (in open license) is useless process.
