Basically, the thing with most accountants is that they want really
some similar environment where they have worked for years.
While the web application of GNUKhata is being used by ICFOSS for 3
years now, the project itself will gain large acceptance if a desktop
based application frontend is provided on the same rock solid core logic.
Besides, we have some very unique features like dual ledger and
rollover, which are not found in Tally or for that matter any
accounting software.
Further more development was never stalled, had had sustained funding
from ICFOSS and development continued.
Happy hacking.

Haven't tried kalculate, but my uniformed impression is that it
requires
OpenLX, and I am not sure how actively the application, or the OS, are
maintained.
I had thought that development of GnuKhata was also stalled, but there
seems to be recent activity on the source code versioning system
linked to
from their site. I will look again into GnuKhata.
Cannot commit to anything at present, but Taxspanner is working on a
book
of accounts system, and in principle we want to open-source it. The
development needed, and the mechanics of actually open-sourcing the
code
probably makes this at least a year away.
All in all, the situation is pretty sad when it comes to open-source
accounting software.

IT for Change has been using Front Accounting for its financial
accounting for two years now and it has been a very effective
replacement to Tally.
Most NGOs can use it.
We do payroll , fixed assets accounting in a spreadsheet and do not have
sales/purchases and so have not used those features in Front Accounting
(www.FrontAccounting.com
