This feature was developed as part of google summer of code. This brings better mobile support for end to end encryption in xmpp. Earlier options were otr and openpgp, both had short comings. OTR works well only when both contacts are online and OpenPGP did not provide 'perfect forward secrecy' (anyone stealing your key will not be able to decrypt your past messages). With omemo, both this shortcomings are overcome. This protocol was first introduced in TextSecure. Now with xmpp chat in diaspora (diasp.in and poddery.com has already activated this feature) finding contacts is also easy.
