Subject: [JNC - Forum] (FWD) developing a new display manager (updated
announcement)

(FORWARDED MESSAGE):

This one for the geeks only on this list.

The machine I do most of my work on runs on two Linux distros: currently Debian
8.5 and Kubuntu 16.04 (these are the most stable versions, if you are curious
about the numbers). I often switch between one and the other due to some
unhappiness in some or other aspect of each.

This unhappiness has reached what one might melodramatically call a "tipping
point". So, I'm thinking of forming a group (not necessarily leading it...) to
fork off a new "display manager" for Linux--something that is way beyond my
programming as well as organizing skills. Let me explain.

I've looked at many display managers, at one time or another, including Gnome,
KDE, Cinnamon, MATE, and a few others. Without exception, all of their
designers show one infuriating flaw: the big egos of their main designers, who
all think they have finally designed the world's best, most powerful, most
intuitive screen/desktop design of all. And so they change the old design with
their flavor-of-the-month (or -of-the-year) and waste all their previous users'
efforts at mastering the previous ones.

I already have a name for the fork I have in mind (non-negotiable--you have to
accept it if you want to join the group). It will be called the QWERTY Desktop
Manager (QDM). It's motto (negotiable) will be: "QWERTY is good enough for me.
Any goddamned/bloody screen layout that has stayed popular long enough is also
good enough for me. Just don't change the layout please!)" QDM will be
described in blurbs as "the QWERTY of screen layouts".

If you want to join my group (seriously !), subscribe to the discussion list
[email protected]. Please circulate widely.
