M_MULTIDATA messages are not what I'd call *real* STREAMs messages anyway since you cannot use all the standard message manipulation functions on them. If the network stack goes down this route then perhaps it would be better to just stop pretending that they are STREAMs messages, extend them as required and stop using STREAMs in the stack.
