(1) VLAN support exists only on switches. A switch port is configured into a
VLAN, but the NIC connected to the switch port (and thus the machine that
has the NIC) doesn't need to be aware of that it belongs to a VLAN.
This is a possible and very typical configuration.
Note that it also possible to have VLAN-unaware switches/hubs passing
802.1q tagged traffic between any one or more of:
- VLAN aware switches
- VLAN aware hosts
