thanks for taking the time to respond, I wrote the author, Masa
Murayama, of the driver collection as well and he just responded with

The chipset on the board are dec2114x. Please try tu-2.x.x
driver instead of alta.

                 :vendor-id     0x1011  <== this is DEC's vendor id.
                 :device-id     0x19    <=  the product is 21142 or 21143

and it works now.
