First of all, you need to detangle routing and name services, so that
you can figure out which one is having trouble here.

What routes do you have? Do you have a default route pointing at your
local router? Try using "ping -n" for that external address -- the
"-n" flag says "print IP addresses as numbers." That will avoid
confusing results with DNS problems. What does "route get
75.9.12.252" report?

Next, how is DNS configured? You say you've "updated" the files, but
I don't know what that means. Do you have /etc/resolv.conf? What's
in it? What is set in /etc/nsswitch.conf for "hosts" and "ipnodes"?

Try doing "getent hosts www.sun.com". Does that work?

There's nothing special that you should need to set in Netscape to
make it work, but if you've previously set proxy or pac addresses or
the like, then that could cause trouble. It's worth checking to make
sure it says "direct Internet connection."

Also, for what it's worth, Solaris 8 is not OpenSolaris, so you're
really asking the wrong mailing list for help. Try bigadmin:

  http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/home/index.html

or one of Sun's local support groups.

Note also that Solaris 8 is EOL, so I'd really encourage you to
upgrade, if that's possible. New versions of Solaris are free and
have many useful new features.
