Sounds like Kacheong answered you question.  In case you want to work
through this some more I think Richard uses something 'rsh foo.com sort
</usr/dict/words' as an example.  I think that example is very
instructive.  Unless the half close was done sort couldn't know see the
eof on its standard input and wouldn't know it could then sort and
output the information.  Using something shorter then /usr/dict/words
snoop this interaction and trace each side through the tcp diagram.
