A slight update on this issue: I got an Intel NIC to test if the results are different, and yes, the random freezes and lock ups do not happen with it. Even with both the Broadcom and Intel NICs running at the same time, traffic on the Broadcom causes the system to freeze, while traffic on the Intel NICs flows without problem.
This is a word of caution to people considering the BCM5704C chipset.
