It sounds like you have Putty configured to use the insecure old
SSHv1.  Out of the box, Solaris supports _only_ SSHv2.

Did you perhaps enable SSHv1 in /etc/ssh/sshd_config in that "first
install?"  I wouldn't recommend doing that.
