RFC1123 expanded RFC952 to permit hostnames to begin with a numeric digit, but it seems that not all Solaris components accepted this, at least until recently. See bug 6442422, for example.
Can anyone tell me if there was a specific Solaris version in which RFC1123 name compatibility was formally added, or has it just crept in over time with bugfixes when problems occurred? I ask because of a situation where it didn't work, and I'm trying to narrow down our options.
