In BSD one could (my knowledge is old ;-) issue SIOCADDMULTI to an 
Ethernet device driver. It might be that when IP handles a 
IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP IP would send a SIOCADDMULTI ioctl to the interface - 
I don't remember the details.

Thus at least part of SIOCADDMULTI is analogous to the DLPI add multi 
capability in Solaris.
