Given that there was a PSARC case recently that introduced the concept of a mail configuration file so that OpenSolaris can be easily support mailers other than sendmail, I'd be cautious here about expecting 100% usability into the long and distant future. Have you thought about constructing a small perl program to run as a server on a TCP port, bound to localhost? Then again, which metacluster is SUNWosdem in? I doubt very much it is in the minimal one and in which case, it may be perfectly ok for you to make it depend on SUNWnetcat.
