dlmgmtd runs as user dladm; if /etc/dladm/datalink.conf is not writable by
dladm, it will be unable to make persistent configuration changes, which
matches your observed symptoms.  That said, I would expect to see error
messages from dlmgmtd in in /var/adm/messages about this; were there any?


I'll have to check. Definitely nothing on the console.

messages file is now (post changing permissions and reboot) full of vnic registered and unregistered messages (88K of them) and 12K dlmgmtd error messages. So 'yes' it did go into the messages file!

Oddly, no 'vlan' ones even though I successfully remove 4K of them.
