I am running in an ESXi 4.0 environment on one physical computer.
OpenSolaris snv_134 is providing SMB through Samba 3.5.1 in a virtual machine. The networking is provided by the e1000 driver.
Windows Server 2008 SP2 x64 is in a virtual machine utilizing SMB. It's using VMXNET3.
They are connected via host-only networking, which does not involve a physical NIC.
I start copying using a backup program (Retrospect) from the real-world network to shares on OpenSolaris. After several minutes as more scripts start running and bandwidth is utilized, the network connection on the OpenSolaris end just stops working.
Pings to OpenSolaris to the affected interface time out. Pings to any guest from OpenSolaris via this interface either time out or take a very long time. Windows is still pingable to its interface from other VMs. This indicates the problem lies with OpenSolaris.
Interestingly, the other interface on OpenSolaris is not affected and I can also ping to the the localhost address on the affected interface.
VMWare emulates the Intel driver, so is there anything I can do to further isolate whether this is a bug in the VMWare e1000 emulated NIC or whether it's the OpenSolaris e1000 driver itself?
