Couple of thought, nothing of current help (as I do not have the OLPCs) Two things, I can think of, that would help debugging in these cases :
A) A tool showing the connectivity, devices it sees, signal strength et al. Do we have such a tool in OLPC ? B) Capture wireless packets in monitor mode Both need to be customized for the OLPC world, showing 802.11s packets semantics as well as aggregate what they mean. May be we already have these. Also, we might need an independent sniffer to debug the packets, topology and the security artifacts. These will be more useful where we have 100s of OLPCs and need to troubleshoot connectivity issues. BTW, to debug connectivity, we need at least 3. Ivan sent me two B2 machines at the beginning of May to take with me when I visit West Africa next month. I just upgraded them to build 406. My experience with networking is similar before and after the new build. On one machine I got nothing, then in the wide neighborhood view, I clicked on the default server and the mesh network, and later I could get to the internet, presumably through my default wireless server, the only unencrypted one visible. Later when I restarted that machine I could not get any connectivity, and I have not been able to get connectivity on the other machine, except under the previous build (385) I briefly saw the other machine's icon, but only briefly before I lost it.
