The applet should be auto-launched for you, since it has a .desktop file in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/. If for some reason it's not being started (which we should figure out), then run: /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable This is odd though; you do have the file /usr/share/gnome/autostart/nm-applet.desktop, right?
