Do you know what kind of wireless card you have in your laptop? I'm guessing its an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945. What's the output of the command "/sbin/lsmod" when you enter that into a terminal and hit return? > When I first start nm-applet it shows the two-computer icon with an x > on it in the panel.
