Btw, NM crowd, any practical/theoretical ideas how to solve this

working on this? :)
your distro may ship usb_modeswitch or modem-modeswitch. Either of
those (or both) are generally the best way to fix this problem.
Sometimes it's also done in the kernel drivers for the device.

I am a newbie at setting wireless broadband therefore my notes are by a
newbie and I compare to Windows settings.
In Windows I plug the card and after making a little modification on
settings due to wrong out-of-the-box settings (settings of modem) on my
new Huawei 1692 dong, I was online, and I still see the mass storage
In Fedora, I had to dig the net to find that I have to install and use
usb_modeswitch, I don't have the broadband connection listed in
nm-applet, I have to use automatic connection to use it...and in any
case I do not have mass storage available.
I think that something could be done to improve situation, as NM is a
great tool in anycase (switching between wired and wireless network is
working like a charm, years ahead of similar tool in M$)
My two cents
