There is no reason to patch drivers if you are using a current version of
Ubuntu.

"ctrl-O" is the emacs command to save a text file. If it is not sticking
you may have to sudo the file so that you have permission to write. Those
directions are old, but for the most part should work.

Gnome PPP doesn't detect my modem, neither does wvdialconf. Any help would

All the methods you have listed are alternatives to the program this list is
based on called Network Manager. If you want to have Network Manager manage
your modem be sure you are using Ubuntu 9.04. I have an Acer Aspire One and
I have Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix running, but there appeared to be an issue
when I used my att modem. I think it was fixed up stream, but I have been
using my sprint modem with that computer lately so I am not sure of the
status.

What is the output of lsusb with the modem plugged? Maybe someone here is
using the same modem and can verify it works in Network Manager.

If you are running Ubuntu 9.04 and NM will not recognize the modem I suggest
trying the daily build as explained here
http://www.asoftsite.org/s9y/archives/164-ubuntu-network-manager-team-offers-daily-builds-for-trunk-aka-0.8-now.html.
If the modem still does not work I would file a bug on the Network Manager
launchpad site.
