Yes, this would be an option, however: This embedded device is not a router, so it would make more sense, if it would get its network information from the PC. But most PCs (esp. Windows) don't act this way. If the embedded device is e.g. configured for a 192.168.x/8 network, it could clash with the configuration of the PC. Therefore I believe a link local address is suitable, even if this involves limitations of connectivity.
