That's an error in negotiation between pppd on your computer and the data stick itself. It's a bug in pppd actually; most cases of it were fixed in pppd 2.4.5, and NetworkManager compensates by using known good nameservers instead, so that you can at least reach sites. Basically, if you aren't using pppd 2.4.5 you should upgrade, and if you are, we'd need to get verbose pppd debug dumps of the negotiation between it and the data stick and file a bug upstream. To do that, you stop NetworkManager, and then run it as root with: NM_PPP_DEBUG=1 NetworkManager --no-daemon and then try to reproduce the problem and mail the log to me.
