Ok, so the problem here is that the modem does not provide multiple AT ports, so if the main port is taken by PPP, we have no other port to ask for signal strength. The device does provide a second serial port, but I have no idea what protocol that port speaks as it's clearly not AT commands. It could be a proprietary Via protocol or something else entirely. Unfortunately there's not much we can do here unless somebody USB packet sniffs the second serial port under Windows so we can see what kind of protocol it uses.
