You might check OSS to see if they have a driver available for native
mode MX300, I know the kernel doesn't have anything.

One other thing you might try is booting Linux using Loadlin instead of
LILO.  That way, you boot into DOS, allow the DOS-compatibility drivers
for the MX-300 install (they'll simply make it look like an SB16 or
such), then boot Linux from there.  Once the compatibility drivers
install, then you'll be able to use the soundcard under Linux as an SB
card.  I've done that here with a Diamond Sonic Impact S-70 card while
waiting (sometimes) patiently for drivers.
