You very probably didn't install glibc-devel (you need to).
If you have installed glibc-devel and it still doesn't work,
/configure i586-pc-linux-gnu
should do the trick.
Btw: glib 1.2.0 is buggy - get 1.2.1.
If you don't need to recompile from source for optimizations, have a look
at the RPM found at
ftp://windows.sucks.eu.org/pub/mandrake/RPMS/glib-1.2.1-1mdk.i386.rpm
