I believe there are large memory patches floating around that will allow
you to use over 2G of RAM. I know that 256M is not a problem.
As for needing a swap partition, that really gets to the issue of what
you're doing with the machine. If you're running large simulations that
require more memory than you've got installed, you will need a swap
partition. If you're doing normal everyday work, 256M is probably
overkill and you'll never see the need for a swap partition. I run with
128M of RAM here and hardly ever touch the swap partition, but this is a
lightly used machine, really.
So, figure out what sort of things you're going to be running and what
sort of runtime memory allocations they make. Base your swap decision
upon those numbers.
