I do not know if there are any external winmodems but I think this is unlikely. I've had cases where even the cheapest taiwanese externals (no-name!) work fine. But be careful of internal ones. Do not go for PCI modems as they all seem to be winmodems...like mine :-( ISA modems would require you ro run isapnp tools to configure it in Linux. This is a command line program. So to sum it up - best bet: get an external modem.
