Here is what I did when I set it up.

Partition the Drive with a program like Partition Magic.

Resize the Windows Partition to = 10 gigs

Do not re-partition the remaining part of the Drive. Leave it alone. Windows will not 
see it so don't worry about it.

Next Run Linux setup. Choose your options. When you hit the Partition part of it. You 
should show

HDA1     10gig        FAT32


Then at the bottom you will see free space.

Some Thing like

1.1gig or 1,100.xx MB

Next Make you partitions

Make sure you don't select Growable for any partition except for the /usr if you want.

This should do it for you. Make / partition the first one.

See if that works.
