Unfortunately, the operation will require a recompile of the kernel.
1. Make sure that you have a current source tree (it's in /usr/src/linux)
2. If not, kernel source and binary RPMS can be downloaded from Mandrake mirror
sites. Select the <b>update</b> option from the mandrake web site.
3. The directions for installing and configuring a kernel can be found at
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/docs/kernel-2.2/kernel2.2-upgrade.html
4. Make sure that the following are compiled into the new kernel:
No IDE/ATAPI cdrom support
Yes SCSI cdrom support (no mod)
Yes SCSI generic support (no mod)
Yes IDE->SCSI emulation
Make all the other stuff how you like. After you follow all the directions
according to the above RedHat kernel upgrade doc, my recommendation is to use
this new kernel as a temporary kernel only when you will be burning CD-Rs. My
ATAPI CD-R works fine following these directions, but lots of other stuff got
screwed up in the process so I have a 'stable' kernel that I usually use for all
my other business. Put these options in LILO so that you can choose which kernel
you want to use at boot time.
5. You may need to edit /etc/lilo.conf and add a line to your new kernel ID:
hdx=ide-scsi
.. x being whatever your CD-R is.
6. Verify the emulation on the command line after reboot with scanbus
7. The only CD-R that you will find for $99 today is a piece of crap that may or
may not work. Conclusion: you get what you pay for.
Good luck - I
