First place to check would be the system logs in /var/log/messages.  See
if there's anything suspicious in those logs -- bad logons, dropped ISP
connections, whatever.

When you dialup, you might try the ifconfig and route commands to see if
the interface got configured correctly and if it's pointing to the
correct place.
