I had a similar problem. The line
> localhost pppd[1381] : Hangup (SIGHUP)
looks like some kind of pppd-timeout.
I just edited the /etc/ppp/options file and removed the "lock",
after that I checked the "lock device" box on the device tab.
Also I unchecked the checkbox on the modem-tab
(I can't translate it, maybe someone with an english version
can, in german it is called "Modem f�gt Tr�gererkennung ein")
If this doesn't help, there is an exccelent description of common
problems in the kde-handbook, kppp section 7
(/usr/share/doc/HTML/default/kppp/kppp-7.html)
Hope it works that way.
