[newbie] Terminal woes

I'm having a bit of trouble with vi. If I start vi as root, it works
flawlessly, as a normal user, however, I get "<ESC>[91m~" as the first
line. Does anyone know where this comes from? It seems to affect every
xwindows type terminal.
