[newbie] using xwindows instead of kde

Hi

I just installed linux mandrake including the kde.
I would like to see what linux is like just using xwindows ie in some way 
not using the kde to see which I prefer. Is this possible?
This is probably a silly question but does linux mandrake come with
xwindows (maybe this is what kde uses under the covers?)?
