Ok,

We have all heard about it and seen the results AGAIN.. This time by ZD
. Ok so Microsoft happens to have a small 5.34% stake in them. Should I say NBC
and CNN also have a small stake. Wait NBC like MSNBC hmm... A little insider
pushing going on here???

Well here are some of my views.

Linux/Unix has the architecturally sophisticated feature of being viewable (and
manipulable) from any monitor on the network. In contrast, NT is hard-wired to
a specific piece of glass. That 17-inch SVGA monitor is the one and only place
from which the system can be accessed.
So I would rather be able to sit at work and say "Oh wow this is a great
program. Let me SSH to my Linux Server load it up and see what is happening."
With NT I would have to go home and do it. :( "

Linux is a little harder to learn and master then the Point and Click world of
Windows. Although getting NT up and running is simple. But wait it is time to
Add a Web Server, Mail Server, Then a News Server, Can we say Multi-User /
Multi-Task problems starting to rise up. Let me see Linux seeing that once you
learn it the entire infrastructure of the Programs that go with it follow the
same lines. So as you start you Email Server (Send Mail) , News Server (Like
INN) , You SQL server (Like PortgressSQL), and other things like samba and NFS
you are more comfortable.

Let us talk about security: I knew this would catch you attention. Would you
rather have to worry about getting "MICROSOFT SECURITY BULLETIN'S" every other
day. Or know that your system is secure. Yes there are some problems like
buffer overflows some DoS attacks and others, But it is so much easier to
auto-deny and person trying to finger you email address with a Linux Box then
it is with NT. Can we also say when a bug is found in a Linux program there is
usually a patch ready to go ASAP... Not a entire new OS like Windows 2000
(Better known as NT5)..

Speed:
So MS brags that it can utilize the 300mhz+ speeds better then
the Apache server. SO.. If I can run 2 + servers on some 200mhz AMD K6
processors for free I would do it. Also why pay so much to have a SQL server
(V. 7 seems to be the new one out for MS), When it comes as part of Linux. Also
I do Like Red Hat and Mandrake, What about running these tests against a Linux
OS like Turbo Linux or Linux Pro.. Linux Pro is more of a Workstation type OS
then Mandrake By Far. I Love mandrake but I know the limits.. Same goes for Red
Hat. I know some of the limits.

UpTime:

Here at my Work we have 7 NT4 servers running and 2 Linux
Servers. The Linux servers run our Website, DNS, ypbind, Email, and some other
services like SSL,PGP for Companies etc.. The Linux Boxes have been up for a
total of 540 + Days without a crash. The closest NT box is 110 days straight
WITHOUT a crash. This includes Restarts for upgrades etc.. We have upgraded the
Kernel more then once here and still have no problems. My Linux Box Mandrake
6.0(Venus) and Red Hat 6.0(hedwig) have been online for 204 days with out going
down.. My other box which Runs NT4 and Win98 plus a stripped down version of
FreeBSD 2.2.8.. Many Crashes, Page Faults, etc...

Hackers:
No Comment Here. Do not really hear of many hackers using a
Windows Based system to Hack. Maybe to hack into a Windows based system. But
they use Unix Based systems... And I am not talking about just malicious
hackers, Ones that look for security flaws on systems and reports them..

Services:

From my own experiences it is so much easier to shut down services
on a Linux box then a NT one. For this I mean like editing the /etc/services
file (Yes I do it in PICO) and on the Fly.. Also during a upgrade of programs
there is no need to restart the computer everytime a change is made to the
init.* or rc.* files.. Unlike windows which asks for a reboot if you add one
line to the Reg file. Hmm....

Junk:

It seems that a NT/9.X system gets more and more junk quicker
then a Linux one. What is with all the .tmp files.. God I did a clean up and
removed over 75 megs of .tmp files. What a waste of space and speed.

Well those are some of my views. Told you a nice Hot Cup of Coffee would go
good with this If your eyes do not hurt already wow. Mine do and I am typing
this.

Thanks,
