You should be able to do this in KDE/Mandrake.  You have to be root and do
Xconfigurator, then let it probe your card for all possible settings.   You
then need to tab or move your cursor to each and use the space bar to check
each one you want to be able to use.  (640x480 8bit, 640x480 16bit, 800x600
16bit, etc.)  All this is pretty self explanatory once you start the
program.  I had the same problem and this fixed it.
