I had the same problem....
I had to go in through gnome. I went into gnome (in runlevel 3: startx
gnome, in runlevel 5: select session type=gnome), then executed kcontrol.
There, I changed the theme. When you go back into KDE, you should be ok.
YOu can also do this through any other windowmanager (wmaker, afterstep,
atc...) and execute it from an xterm.
